A calmer living room, thoughtfully arranged
Share
A welcoming living room starts with how you want to spend time in it. Reading by the window, gathering with friends or stretching out at the end of the day each asks something different of the space.
Before choosing furniture, decide what the room needs to do for you.
Start with the largest piece
Let your sofa establish the layout. Measure its footprint on the floor with masking tape, then walk around it. Check that doors can open and that the route through the room feels comfortable.
The right size is the one that gives you enough seating while leaving room to move.
Keep the palette simple
Choose a small family of colours you enjoy living with. Warm neutrals offer a quiet starting point; deeper tones can add definition through an occasional chair, a rug or a favourite object.
Use differences in texture to bring interest to the room. A woven fabric beside a smooth tabletop can feel considered without adding another colour.
Make every surface useful
Place a side table where you naturally reach for a drink or a book. Keep the coffee table close enough to use comfortably, with space to pass between it and the seating.
Leave some surfaces clear. A room does not need an object in every corner to feel complete.
Finish slowly
Start with the pieces you use most, then spend time in the room before adding more. Your daily habits will tell you where an extra seat, a lamp or a little more storage belongs.
